Why Some Ultrasound Images Can't Be Enhanced (And How to Tell)

AI enhancement can only reveal detail your scan actually captured — so an ultrasound where the face was blocked, the resolution was extremely low, or the file was heavily compressed has a hard ceiling no algorithm can break. The one rule that governs everything

Ultrasound enhancement is recovery, not creation. A scan is a recording of sound echoes; if an echo never reached the probe — because a hand, the placenta, or the umbilical cord was in the way — that information simply does not exist in the file. Honest enhancement sharpens, rebalances, and cleans what's there. Anything that promises to "generate" the hidden parts of your baby's face is inventing a face, and it won't be yours.

The five most common blockers

  1. Obstruction. Hands and feet in front of the face are the #1 issue — babies love their fists. Enhancement can improve everything visible, but can't move the hand.
  2. Position and angle. A face turned toward the spine or pressed into the uterine wall gives the probe nothing to record.
  3. Very early or very late scans. Before ~24 weeks there's little facial fat to define features; after ~36 weeks the baby is often too low and crowded for a clear angle. Weeks 26–34 are the sweet spot.
  4. Extreme low resolution. A tiny thumbnail texted three times and screenshotted twice loses real information at each step. Always start from the largest, most original version you have.
  5. Heavy compression artifacts. Aggressive JPEG compression replaces fine detail with blocky patterns that can't be reversed — only softened.

What's usually fixable (people are often surprised)

  • Fading — thermal printout fading responds remarkably well to tone recovery.
  • Darkness and murk — underexposed 3D/4D renders often hide a lovely face that contrast recovery reveals.
  • Machine clutter — rulers, menus, and vendor text overlaying the image are removable.
  • Glare and moiré from photographing a printout — largely correctable.
  • General softness — mild blur from printing or scanning sharpens well.
